Media Interview - Maryknoll Students Lending a Helping Hand with Technology

Last year, our school was successfully nominated for the Hong Kong Volunteer Award – Jockey Club Outstanding Caring School Award, hence we were recently invited by the Agency for Volunteer Service for an interview to share how innovative technology helps improve the lives of elderlies.

Principal Mr. Andy Cheng Ying Kai stated the school’s active integration of STEAM education with volunteer services, so as to encourage students to serve the community by utilizing innovative thinking. The coordinator of STEAM Education committee Mr. Ko has carefully designed a curriculum that spans from junior to senior secondary level, focusing on elderly-friendly products as the project topic and providing students with hands-on experience in designing and creating technological products catering for elderlies’ needs.

Designing the “Going Out Reminder”, Lau Pui Man from Secondary 4 pointed out that many elderly experience memory decline and often forget to bring their phones or keys, causing trouble for them and their families. After a discussion with classmates, she came up with designing a smart reminder device. In the interview, she also shared memorable experience during the installation.

Lai Hoi Ching from Secondary 3 combined Scratch and artificial intelligence to design a memory game called “Diary of Healthy Life”, which assists elderlies with Alzheimer's in training their memory and problem-solving skills through a virtual scenario of a traditional wet market, thereby helping them regain memories of daily life and improve their mental health.
